Chemuyil’s baseball field, seriously damaged in the wake of Hurricane Emily, was re-inaugurated with the name “Samuel Mukul May”, before a considerable gathering of eager sportspeople and fans, who will now be able to play the “[Inter]National Pastime” in far better conditions than ever before. In keeping with its annual tradition, Xel-Há recently had the opportunity to participate in the Juguetón 2008, a charity project endorsed by the Salinas Group and TV Azteca with the sole purpose of reaching children in underprivileged communities of Mayan territory, who often lack the resources to celebrate with toys and other gifts traditionally delivered on Día de Reyes. For the third year running, Xel-Ha undertakes this house-painting contest for the benefit of Chemuyil, which has, ever since its first edition, been vital in enhancing not only the urban landscape, but the creativity and kinship of the community as well.

The brimming expectations of hundreds of local contestants and members of the press, built up enormously during the last few days, was at last abated with the decision of the jury, constituted by members of Xel-Ha’s Executive Committee and Chemuyil community representatives, this past Monday, December 17th.

The honors of the opening statements were left to Ricardo Saenz Morales, biologist, manager in charge of Sustainable Development at Xel-Ha, who, in mentioning that this program is barely in its third consecutive year, stated his surprise at the renewed and intense interest shown by the local inhabitants, plainly pouring their best efforts and all their talent into painting the façades for their houses. The competition was astonishingly close, making it very difficult for the jury to select its winners.

Following the presentation regarding the enterprises undertaken by Xel-Ha for the benefit of Chemuyil community during the last ten years, and amidst the explosive excitement on behalf of the townspeople, the jury’s decisions were finally announced.
