CANCUN, RIVIERA MAYA; AUGUST 2009.- A group of young volunteers native of Madagascar, Korea, Canada, France, Japan and Germany, sponsored by Vive Mexico C.A. and the UNESCO, made support activities to community in Chemuyil and knew the sustainable tourist recreation model, of natural park Xel-Ha, as part of activities of their visit in Quintana Roo.
Volunteers, whose are less than 25 years old, renovated the basketball court in Chemuyil and shared with children and young people from the community where Xel-Ha has worked on during several years in order to hold community development through different programs to enhance health, education, urban image, public services, and the responsible domestic waste management, as well as care of environment.

Xel-Ha became the first park in Latin America to apply for Green Globe international certification, one of a kind worldwide, acknowledged in the spheres of sustainable tourism, and greatly influential on the sector’s most important tour operators’ decision making.
This was made public after the inspective visit made to Xel-Ha on behalf of Gustavo Ramos, Green Globe Latin America coordinator, during which he was presented with the set of principles, commitments, and actions that make this Natural Park the model of sustainable tourist recreation it is, by Xel-Ha’s executive director, Elizabeth Lugo, and the Park’s Executive Committee.

GUADALAJARA, JALISCO; SEPTEMBER 9.- Jorge Villalobos, president of the Mexican Philanthropy Centre (CEMEFI), summoned Mexican and Latin American corporations to join social responsibility movements, which, he remarked, will represent an important distinction in the private sector of the 21st century. This occurred during the 2008 International Seminary for the Best Socially Responsible Corporate Actions, wherein Xel-Ha received the Award for Best Socially Responsible Corporate Action, in the environmental category.
With this award, received by Xel-Ha’s head of Sustainable Development, Ricardo Saenz, Xel-Ha became one of the 40 Latin American companies to receive this year’s acknowledgements for their extraordinary labour towards caring for the environment, and the preservation of culture and traditions, alongside important corporations such as Petrobras and Natura, from Brazil, Cemex, Vitro, and Cuahtemoc Moctezuma, from Mexico, among others.

An average 25,355 gallons of water a day are reused for the watering of vegetation in Xel-Ha, after efficient treatment with automated aerobic systems. This is an important part of the Environmental Management System that controls the operation of this 200-plus acre natural reserve, declared Ricardo Saenz, Sustainable Development manager for one of Mexico’s thirteen Natural Wonders.
When questioned about how he applies the sustainable administration in Xel-Ha, during the World Environment Day context, Ricardo Saenz explained how, regarding the recycling of waste waters, the company has established a system of three septic tanks since 1995, which was upgraded to 5 water-treating plants in 2000, with automated aerobic systems that constantly maintain quality standards for these treated waters, within the norms currently in use. Three manatees, weighing a combined total of nearly a ton, arrived on Tuesday to Xel-Ha Natural Wonder, which will be their new home from today, a natural niche that will additionally serve to display their habits and lives for the appreciation and joy of visitors.
The specimens’ names are Bu’ul, the youngest, a male 8 months old, weighing around 220 lbs, whose name means “bean” in Mayan; Bu’ul’s mother Pompom, thirteen years old and weighing around 1,100 lbs; and Baaxal, an adolescent female whose name means “toy” in Mayan, weighing almost 650 lbs. (more…)
