Xel-Ha awarded new acknowledgement for its exemplary waste management
Posted by: dvillacis in Awards and acknowledgementsFor the second time in 2008, Xel-Ha Natural Wonder was awarded a national acknowledgment for its ongoing labour at the “Waste Recollection and Transfer Centre”, in which over 400 tons of waste matter is gathered and separated yearly; the Mexican Philanthropy Centre will deliver the prize to the Best Company Practices in the “Integral Management of Solid Wastes” category.
During the event, that will be held September 8th in Guadalajara, several corporate practices will be acknowledged, which, as Xel-Ha’s, contribute to caring for the environment and are worthy examples on a national level: “Recycling and Treatment for Residual Waters”, by Colgate Palmolive; “Residual Co-processing” by CeMex; “Alternative Energy Recycling Program for Ecosystem Conservation”, by Cementos Cruz Azul; as well as “Sustainable management for spent tyres”, by Holcim Apasco, amongst several others.
The “Waste Recollection and Transfer Centre” in Xel-Ha has evolved from 1999 into a full-fledged program that separates and manages waste generated daily as a product of tourist activity. Careful and timely classification of waste products has allowed an average recycling volume of 70% of total generated waste.
From 1999 to 2007, over 1017 tons of organic material have been recovered, 104 tons of paper and cardboard, and over 16 tons of metal. This activity on behalf of any tourist company is fundamental, due to the fact that it avoids the saturation of sanitary landfills and extends the lifespan of both landfills and the surrounding environment.
Besides, WRTC functions as a educational role model for schools, organisations, and individuals interested in having a closer look at this experience. This project is in constant stages of improvement, thanks to the ISO14001 system’s implementation. Barely days ago, on July 5th, Xel-Ha received the National Acknowledgement to Residue Recycling, granted by the SEMARNAT and Coparmex. Xel-Ha has been awarded the 100 Greatest Places to Work in Mexico acknowledgement as well, continuously for the past 5 years, and has been certified as a Socially Responsible Company for the 7th consecutive year.
The Mexican Centre for Philanthropy (CeMeFi), is a non-profit association founded in December 1988, as a private institution without ties to any political parties or religious or racial groups. Over 630 persons are members of the CeMeFi, including representatives from several benefit organisations, government secretariats, and international institutions. Their goal is to endorse and systematically acknowledge philanthropic, committed, and socially responsible participation on behalf of citizens and diverse organisations, in an aim to achieve a more supportive, just, and prosperous society.
