Presided by the Mayan priest Pedro May Canal, within an atmosphere of profound mysticism, the Honey Harvesting Festival of the Mayan Bee, was celebrated in Xel-Há. This ancient rite, once common in the Yucatan Peninsula, has slowly been fading in practice with the passage of time.

Apiculture for the Mayan been, referred to as meliponiculture, is an activity that has lost its strength in recent year, and currently the meliponini bee is considered to be an endangered variety. Nowadays, it is only practiced in a few traditional Mayan Farms and in Xel-Ha, where it was recently (2007) awarded an acknowledgement for one of the best social responsibility practices endorsed by a company, on behalf of the CEMEFI (Mexican Philanthropy Centre).

While explaining that the right to equal opportunities between men and women is fundamental to sustainable development, Xel-Ha’s Executive Director, Elizabeth Lugo Monjaraz declared this company to be among the first acknowledged worldwide with the Gender Equity Certificate, granted by the National Women’s Institute, carrying with it the responsibility to work constantly to achieve this goal.

This event, within the context of the Human Capital congress organised by Uniglobal, which offers professional university certification services directed towards tourism industry professionals, academics, students, and the general public. Elizabeth Lugo was among the spokespersons to participate and share their professional experience on the Gender Equity subject. She was accompanied by business leaders and academics with relevant subjects such as Ethics in Service and World Quality Service.
