Once the news was heard, it rapidly spread throughout the small community of 1,200 inhabitants like a rumour of something unbelievable, but with the ripping fuel of hope for the minimal possibility of actually coming true: Quintana Roo’s Tigers, the celebrated baseball team, was indeed visiting Chemuyil’s younger population on April 30th to commemorate Children’s Day.

Expectation was so great, that when the dream finally came true, the youngsters could not find enough ways to preserve the moment: those best prepared took their baseballs to be autographed, others received signatures on their notebooks, school uniforms, even on their own arms and legs.

Children and youths from Chemuyil, Quintana Roo, were invited to watch a professional league game courtesy of the state’s professional league baseball team, the Tigers, in an opportunity that was for many, their first time in a actual baseball stadium. The Tigers were pitted against the Minatitlan Oilers (Petroleros de Minatitlán) and struggled to victory by a single run at the end of the ninth inning.

The Tiger’s board of directors, in alliance with Xel-Ha, made it possible for 120 children and youngsters from Chemuyil and Tulum to experience the feel of a professional game, in the Beto Avila Stadium, and enjoy a thrilling game, especially in the final moments, when the home team, Tigers, scored the winning run walking with loaded bases.  (more…)
