Chemuyil’s baseball field, seriously damaged in the wake of Hurricane Emily, was re-inaugurated with the name “Samuel Mukul May”, before a considerable gathering of eager sportspeople and fans, who will now be able to play the “[Inter]National Pastime” in far better conditions than ever before. The reconstruction was financed by Xel-Ha Park as part of the continuous effort to improve the standards of living in this small yet enormously important community, where 50% of Xel-Ha’s workforce resides.

During the stadium’s re-inauguration ceremony, Xel-Ha’s representatives paid homage to Samuel Mukul May, a longtime model resident of Chemuyil community and an ideal example of hard work, responsibility and humanity, a constant advocate of social progress in his hometown.

Rebuilding the site involved leveling the playing field, placing a wire mesh fence around the diamond and the construction of a much-needed roof for shade, thanks to which the field is in top shape, waiting for spectators to enjoy the future games in several different leagues.

It was in fact Chemuyil’s townspeople who decided, along with the local Sports Committee and municipal authorities, that the field be dedicated to the memory of Samuel Mukul, who passed away in an accident in early 2007.

The opening speech was left to Elizabeth Lugo Monjarras, Xel-Ha Park Manager, who emphasized the company’s commitment to support Chemuyil’s development, and simultaneously praised Mukul May’s lifework as an outstanding figure in the company during 12 years. The honorary plaque was unveiled by Mukul May’s widow, Mrs. Rosario Ramos, alongside her daughters.
